PRINCELY TREASURES FILM FESTIVAL OPENING PARTY
by Dr Stefano Carboni, Director of the Art Gallery of Western Australia.
Monday 11 July 2011

Join us for the gala Opening Party of the Princely Treasures Film Festival. The evening begins with a wonderful violin and piano recital by Pavel Sergeyev and Larissa Sergeyeva, performing a selection of Russian works that evoke the very essence of the Russian soul. Dr Stefano Carboni will then officially open the Film Festival and introduce the first of a series on APPRECIATING: Miniature of Peter the Great of Russia with a black page attributed to Baron Gustaf von Mardefeld.

Then sit back and enjoy the inaugural film of the Festival!

SERIES 1: RUSSIA IN THE AGE OF PETER THE GREAT
Peter the Great was a despot, a plotter who didn’t hesitate to slaughter thousands if they displeased him; he even sentenced his own son to death. But he is also considered ‘The Great’ because of what he did for Russia – aligning his country with European modernisation. A man of many contradictions, Peter the Great is remembered not only for his ruthlessness, but also for his hands-on in ship making and his brilliant design skills as St Petersburg attests.

MR MICHAEL HOWARD
RODIN AND DEGAS

Two of the nineteenth century’s most famous artists are explored through their interest in
movement: Auguste Rodin’s work is a struggle between the immediacy of the physical and a
deep yearning for spiritual resolution – and Edgar Degas, famous for his paintings of ballet
dancers and race horses was fired by what he termed ‘the consolation of movement’ – an abiding
concern that found profound expression in his audacious private sculptural works.

DR SOPHIE OOSTERWIJK
THE FRUITS OF SIN: The Art and Times of Hieronymus Bosch

To a modern viewer the fantastic world that the Early Netherlandish painter Hieronymus Bosch (d. 1516) presents in his paintings may seem bizarre. His scenes of Creation, the Last Judgment, Hell, saints and the life of Christ are full of caricature characters and hybrid monsters who torture their human victims in highly imaginative ways. Unsurprisingly, Bosch’s art has often been ‘explained’ as the work of a visionary, a heretic, or even a hallucinating madman.

MR JOHN ERICSON
THE SHAKERS OF NORTH AMERICA

In North America there is tremendous interest in all things Shaker. In the last twenty years several museums have been established on the former sites of Shaker settlements and each of these receives thousands of visitors every year. When genuine examples of Shaker furniture come to auction they fetch prices far in excess of fine European examples of the same period. This furniture is rather plain or even austere - so what is the attraction and why is it so popular and highly valued?
The Shakers were a small group of religious dissidents and had their origins in mid-eighteenth century England. They established themselves initially in the north eastern states in agrarian communities as they attempted to build Utopia.
In this lecture John tells the story of the Shakers, their beginnings, what they believed in and how they lived and finally examples of their wonderful buildings and furniture.
